Lamo School is based in an area where the population survives from subsistence farming, and do not have the money to establish a school. Up until 1997, there was no school. However, trekkers passing through the area started contributing to the creation of a school, and
The school now has 1600 pupils, who have to walk up to 2 hours each way each day to reach the school (they can be as young as 6 years old). It is the only school in the area. Many of the villages do not even have a school. There is no electricity, 4 basic, non-
flushing toilets, and classrooms consisting of corrugated iron roofs and mud walls. Chairs are few and far between, and for most of the average class size of 60 – 80, they have to sit on the floor. The teacher is lucky to have a desk.
